OSX.Loosemaque: malware just for OS X

Say what you may about the open source types, but they generally come across as intelligent types. Misguided, yes; but intelligent, nonetheless.

Contrast that with the herd that is known somewhat affectionately as Macaholics.

With their incredibly insular view of the world at large, they seem to live as much as possible to the ideals espoused by those I’m a PC, You’re a Mac ads. You know the Mac types, always ready to repeat the trite platitudes of their patron saint, no malware, better security, more elegant, etc.

Of all those, the only one still kinda true is the elegance of the Mac UI, which, in plain English, is as smooth as 100-year old Grand Marnier.

The security thing has been thoroughly debunked by the research at the Black Hat confabs, and today, comes the news of a piece of malware for the Mac that is so comical in its chosen distribution mode that have to be a Mac user to fall for it.

It is a game that you download from a website where the author has implemented a destructive file erase component to the game: you destroy an alien ship, the malware erases a file on your system.

According to Symantec:

What’s interesting is that the author of this “game” flat-out says what it does on his Web site. Reading through the author’s description, it seems that he has created this game/threat as some sort artistic project. The aliens are your files and there are consequences for “killing” them. However, if you die, the game is supposed to delete itself. Each file of your home directory appears only once, and the author seems to suggest that not destroying any ships may end up with positive consequences. (We were unable to discover if this was the case, as the game crashes before reaching the end.)

You wanna bet that right after reading about the game, Macaholics would go en masse to said website and start downloading. Smugly, too!
