The SmallBizWindows Virtualization Product of the Year 2010: Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2
Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 is our Virtualization Product of the Year.
2010 was a watershed year for Hyper-V. it was the year it achieved near-feature parity with VMware’s eponymous product, and in the instance of live migrations over a WAN, surpass VMware.
Coupled with Windows Server 2008 R2, Hyper-V in 2010 actually became a pleasure to architect for, implement, use, and manage.
It is a product with which we are intimately familiar, and we have already deployed to customers.
What about VMware?
Despite our preference for Hyper-V, we are not crazy here at SmallBizWindows (or at Logikworx). VMware is the 800-ton elephant in the room!
The current leader is server virtualization offerings, VMware is a superb, innovative, and well-supported virtualization product. It is backed by an excellent and passionate professionals community, and delivered by a great company that is part of one of the most well-run companies in technology, EMC.
Again, why not VMware?
The simple answer is that we currently do not possess enough expertise in the product to correctly compare it to Hyper-V. We are in the process of doing that right now, having started a VMware Pilot Program at Logikworx.
That said, we chose Hyper-V Server 2010 because it satisfies all of the needs of the clients it is currently deployed at for now and the foreseeable future. However, if clients’ needs change, or we find that VMware is the better choice for them at the conclusion of our pilot, we would NOT hesitate to move to VMware. Immediately.
